A Little About Our School

Yellow River Bilingual School is located in Dongying, Shandong province, China.

We have a student population of approximately 1,000 covering kindergarten to grade 5.

Facilities

Our campus includes facilities such as a cafeteria (serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner 5 days a week), basketball courts, ping-pong tables, and a running track encircling a soccer field.

On Campus Housing

Our school provides free on campus housing to foreign teachers in a separate building. We provide our teachers with an air conditioner, water cooler, flat-screen tv, armoire, refrigerator and water heater.

We also provide free water (both bottled and tap), electricity, gas, and heating in the winter. The room contains a main bedroom, a kitchenette, and a bathroom with a shower.

School Community

We plan occasional school trips and outings for the foreign teachers to explore the surrounding area of Dongying. Examples of previous trips include an outing to Yunmen Mountain.

Upon Arrival

We will greet you at the Beijing airport and provide you with transportation from the airport to Dongying. Upon arriving in Dongying, we will help you to set up a bank account, exchange money, finalize your residence permit, pay for your medical examine and anything else you require to make your initial stay more comfortable.

A Little About Dongying

Dongying is situated on the northern coast of Shandong Province in Eastern China and is located on the mouth of the Yellow River. The city began to grow quickly in 1983 based around the opportunities provided by China's second biggest oilfield (Victory Oilfield).

Economy

Dongying's economy has grown significantly in recent years leading to a great boom of prosperity in the city and an influx of people from all parts of China. Since Dongying is a prosperous yet small city (by Chinese standards) the people are generally very friendly and welcoming towards Western people.

Environment

Being an affluent city, the crime rate is low and the air quality is good (especially when compared to major cities like Beijing and Shanghai). Dongying has recently undergone a 'Green’ campaign with trees and flowers being planted all over the city.

Teaching

We provide our teachers with weekly lesson packs which contain a lesson outline, target vocabulary words, a phonics program, flashcards, a story and a song. We offer lesson packs that allow our teachers to focus on designing creative and interesting lessons, as opposed to making teachers struggle to think of topics and find resources each week. In addition to providing teaching materials we also provide a teacher training manual, an activity/game idea book, and support in developing/implementing lesson plans from the director of the foreign teaching department. We also provide a Chinese teaching assistant who will help you with things inside and outside the classroom.

Our Classrooms

Your classroom will be equipped with a large flat-screen television (with a USB port to display pictures/play music), a projector (to display flashcards/song lyrics) and a blackboard.

Our Students

Most of our students are very hardworking and dedicated learners. The students are generally well behaved and fun to work with. Our class sizes range from 22 – 32 students.

Cost of Living

Since Dongying is a smaller city, the cost of food and goods are lower than in major cities. For example, a filling lunch at a small Chinese restaurant will cost you 10 RMB (less than 2 dollars).

Getting around Dongying is also very cheap, with taxi's starting at 7 RMB (approx. a dollar) and buses at 1 RMB (approx. 15 cents)

Shopping

Dongying has no shortage of shopping areas with everything from high-end department stores selling designer goods to outdoor barter markets.

Western Goods

Most Western goods are available in Dongying, though if they are not we will help you in ordering anything you need through TaoBao (Chinese version of eBay), and we will assist you in ordering any goods you may want.

Dining Out: Western Style

Worried you'll miss some of your favourite dishes from back home? Don't worry, Dongying has a good selection of Western restaurants, and also has restaurant chains such as McDonalds, KFC, and Pizza Hut.

Dining Out Chinese Style

Wanting to try some of China's vast array of culinary styles? People have immigrated to Dongying from all over China so you can get authentic Chinese dishes such as spicy Sichuan (Kung Pao Chicken), local Shandong (fresh seafood), Xinjiang cuisine (barbeque and nan bread), and much more.

Language Barrier

Any time you move into a new country there are bound to be difficulties. The biggest challenge that most teachers face is the language barrier. Chinese is a notoriously difficult language and since Dongying is a smaller city there are not a lot of people who speak English. However, there is an English Major program at the local University of Petroleum. To help lessen this the school will assist new teachers with any problems they may have.

Joining Our School

If you are interested in applying for a position at our school, you must:

- Have a professional work ethic.

- Be a native English speaker from a native English speaking country

- Hold a BA in any discipline.

- Having a CELTA/TEFL/etc. or experience working with children is preferred.

Contract Overview

Teachers will teach a maximum of twenty-four 35 minute classes a week (Monday – Friday, 8:45 – 4:00).

Contracts run from September – June (10 months).

Guaranteed one month vacation for winter holiday (Chinese New Year) plus all standard national holidays.

Airfare and medical insurance reimbursements (flight to China in October and flight home upon completion of the contract).

Legal working visa.
